Revenants are demi-humans, usually spirits who are brought back to life after dying on their account. The term is broad and somewhat ambiguous, and as such not formally used in discussions about species taxonomy, as some reanimated species such as many vampire subspecies do not prefer to use the term. The term is most often used to refer to ghosts and ghouls who are reborn after experiencing significant unrest during their death while having a significant amount of magical energy in their body during their death. The term also traditionally excludes humans who are not revived of their own accord, such as through necromancy.
Revenants are not formally recognized in the Émile system for demi-human species taxonomy, but other more specific categories such as ghosts are sometimes recognized. Usually though, revenants fall under the kingdom Aetherius, or rarely Infernalis. Revenants are usually not inherently disposed to act in any particular way by their species, and usually maintain their human characteristics, although they often behave eccentrically and frequently have a thirst for revenge as it usually takes very significant emotional unrest to be revived in the moment of death. Less troubled humans simply pass on to the afterlife after their death. Revenants are usually, but not always, born from former humans.
